Board Development and Engagement Series - Track 101
Session 1: Board responsibilities (oversight and accountability)
Serving on a non-profit board is an honor AND a responsibility. This session will provide an overview of the ten basic responsibilities of serving on a non-profit board. In addition, participants will share and learn about ways to communicate those responsibilities to prospects and board members through position profiles and job descriptions. And no discussion of board responsibilities is complete without defining the CEO/E. D’s role and how the board and chief staff person work together.
Session 2: Assessing your board & strategic recruitment.
Is your board willing to judge their collective performance and understand the extent of their individual responsibilities? When was the last time your board underwent an assessment and set goals on its engagement in the organization, areas for increased learning and board fundraising milestones? While not a yearly practice, it is a powerful tool to drive board engagement and strategic recruitment of new members. Learn how to break out of the “who do you know” syndrome when it is nominating time! This session will inspire you and lead to meaningful discussions with your board members.
Session 3: Orientation & Board’s role in Fundraising
Getting board members started on the right foot is critical to their success. This session will focus on a documented orientation process to ensure all board members receive consistent information on governance responsibilities, the history of the organization, programming, financials and the board’s expectations of its members including fundraising. The second half of the session will focus on Give/Get policies, ways to engage board members in development activities within their comfort zone and board meeting activities that keep fundraising in front of the board.
