Celtic mythology, especially in the Gaelic (Irish and Scottish) traditions, is both intensely ecological and intensely woman-centred. It offers up a world in which there’s a reciprocal and respectful contract between the people and the land – a world which is dominated by powerful divine women who are the creators and shapers of the land, its guardians and protectors, and who represent the moral and spiritual authority of the Otherworld. And so they represent the spirit of the Earth itself: the anima mundi. In this lecture, Sharon will introduce us to these archetypal motifs and characters in the Celtic traditions, which have so rarely been a focus in the world of depth psychology.
Dr. Sharon Blackie is an award-winning writer of fiction and nonfiction (including the word-of-mouth bestseller If Women Rose Rooted) and is recognized internationally for her work on cultivating the mythic imagination. She’s a mythologist with a specialization in Celtic Studies, and a psychologist who has specialized both in neuroscience and narrative. Her unique approach to working with myth, fairy tales and folklore highlights the insights these traditions can offer us into authentic and meaningful ways of being which are founded on a return to the native wisdom traditions of the West, and on cultivating a deep sense of belonging to the places we inhabit.
