A talk 'Spirit of Freedom' on Ukrainian Architecture and paintings and Q&A with Professor Alexei Leporc, Curator at the Department of Western European Art, Keeper of XIX-XX century prints at The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
For a long time, the history of Ukraine was little-known in Europe. Sadly, recent tragic events have made it a burning question. The lecture will present this history as visually as possible, from the time of the emergence of Kievan Rus to the divergent development paths of Moscow and the southern lands. Union with Moscow in the mid-17th century was an attempt to gain relative independence that soon showed its futility. But the free spirit of the Ukrainian cossacks endured much longer. Indeed, Ukrainian peasants were serfs for less than a century (at least 3 times shorter than their Russian counterparts). The first attempts to attain true independence in 1918 culminated in 1991. But today, 30 years on, it has become clear that the struggle is still ongoing. The lecture will illustrate this history with examples of Ukrainian architecture and paintings depicting major historical events.
Professor Alexei Leporc is one of Russia’s foremost experts in Architecture, Western European and Russian Art. Previously, Alexei was Professor of 15th to 20th Century Western European art and architecture at the European University and the Technical University in St.Petersburg. Alexei has held research positions at the Institutes of Art History in Vienna and Munich, lectured at the Universities of Munich, Lancaster and Bangor, at the Royal Geographical Society and the Courtauld Institute among others. His publications feature G. Minne, F. Bacon, O. Kokoschka, M. Hambling and cover a wide range of contemporary architecture.
Our cause is in neighbouring Moldova as currently we don't have any projects in Ukraine. There is very little support for disabled children and their families in Moldova, particularly in rural areas. More often than not a diagnosis only brings stigma rather than the assistance that can help children reach their potential. St Gregory’s supports the local charity The Wish (Dorintsa) in Calarasi which runs a multi-disciplinary programme for children including physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, play therapy and accessible education.
Tickets include the 40 minute talk and Q&A and a recording of the lecture plus entry to a raffle to win a gift from the SGF online shop.
Entrants to the raffle must be aged 18 or over and, due to licensing requirements, resident in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).
