Full High School Biology Course in 8 weeksClass Dates: Tuesdays & Thursdays, May 31-July 21Class Time: 12:30-4:30 pmHomework required. Grades will be assigned. This course is for any high school student looking to complete high school Biology and especially students who need Biology in order to take the dual credit Bio-Technology Course at Extraordinary Education in fall 2016. Also open to any high school student who wants to learn cool stuff about science and super heroes!Studying for Biology can be pretty boring for a teenager. Students have always complained about how boring it is to learn the parts of a plant or how cells divide. Many of the examples typically used to illustrate Biological concepts are decades old. Designed when most kids still lived on farms or least had relatives in the country these examples have little meaning to today’s children. This course aims to solve this problem by explaining things in terms of something most kids aren’t just familiar with but are obsessed with - SUPER HEROES!The course will focus on making sure students understand how to distinguish what is and isn’t possible in the real world. Super heroes are fun - but are they possible? How heavy would Superman have to be to make him bullet proof? Could a spider bite really give you super powers? The answer might surprise you. During the course students will analyze their favorite super powered heroes and villains and see if nature (or modern technology) has a way to make the character possible in the real world. As a final project all students will create (and present to the class) their own unique super powered human – one that is based on sound scientific fact. Examples of topics to be covered in this course:Human Torch There are many reasons a "burning" or "flaming" human is not possible. However, a form of matter called cold plasma could act in a similar way to that see in the flames of the human torch. This still might not seem very feasible except that our bodies already produce this substance in small quantities!HulkWhat do high doses of radiation actually do to a person? From the Hulk students will learn about cells, cell growth and death(apoptosis), and cancer.SupermanWhat properties would Superman's skin have if it really were bullet proof? How heavy would he have to be? There are many problems with the "physics" of Superman but there are some very interesting solutions unfortunately he wouldn't look very "human".SpidermanWhat might happen if you did mix the genes of a spider and a human? From Spiderman students will learn about genetic engineering and the development of genetic chimeras. Professor XHow does the brain work. What are brain waves? Can you transmit them? From Charles Xavier we will look into recent developments involving reading people's minds.Dr. WhoHow long can one person live? Why would Dr.Who have to regenerate into a whole new "person" to repair damaged body. From the "Doctor" student will learn about aging but we will also look into the feasability of time travel, and extra-dimensional physics. Mr. SpockWhat would an "alien" actually look like? Probably not us...The "Alien"In the movie Alien the creature had a very complex life cycle - including a stage where he incubated inside a human. From the movie the Alien we will investigate parasites, life cycles, and how realistic the "Alien" really was!GodzillaCan an organism actually grow to 400 feet tall? Maybe - if you stay in the water. And many others....
