Description
"... he not busy being born is busy dying"
Bob Dylan is arguably the greatest songwriter ever. He has been a major figure in popular culture for over 60 years - and at the forefront of artistic and cultural changes every step of the way.
'The voice of his generation' is a title he continually rejects. But, who else even comes close?
His lyrics are stuck in everyone's head. They incorporate political, social, philosophical, biblical and literary influences - all wrapped up in fresh musical forms and delivered as enigmatic poetry. He's continually defied pop music conventions and appealed to a counterculture looking for new forms of expression.
We've picked out some of our favourite Bob Dylan songs - and a few you may not know (but probably should). And, we've tracked down a few performers to present them - each in their own special way.
"They're selling postcards of the hanging, they're painting the passports brownThe beauty parlor is filled with sailors, the circus is in town"
Please join us as Mark Despault, Noah Zacharin, Rick Zimmerman and some surprise guests get Tangled Up In BOB on the outdoor stage at Karlo Estates this Labour Day Weekend - Saturday, September 2.
Mark Despault began performing and writing music in the 70’s, being highly influenced by the folk music of the 60’s and the rock and roll explosion of the late sixties. He went on to record and play with many bands including the heritage group, the Wakami Wailers, the humorous duo The Frere Brothers, and the alt-country folk group, Luck’s X-RD.
Noah Zacharin is a widely acclaimed guitar master, multi-genre songwriter, and dynamic performer. He has been called "a stunning guitarist...no stylistic boundaries" (Holger Peterson, CBC, Stony Plain Records), "a wonderful songwriter and performer" (Paul Mills, Borealis Records), "a poet, a songwriter, a singer we have been waiting for" (the late Penny Lang), "a great guitarist/ singer/ songwriter...a wonderfully musical player" (Randy Finney, TFGA), "in a league of his own" (Brian Gladstone, Founder and AD Winterfolk Festival), "one of the best songwriters this country has produced" (the late great Rick Fielding)
"...the beauty of Dylan's work is that an entire night could be comprised of covers by many artists of one single song and it'd still be interesting."
Rick Zimmerman is a familiar face on stages in the Quinte region. He regularly hosts music, theatre and fundraising events, and has played alongside many of your favourite County artists. Some time, back in the 70s....he admits that he's a little foggy on dates, and events, from back then.... Rick was hangin' out with his artsy and musical friends, listening to those folk and protest songs we all still know the words of, and Dylan was right at the top of everyone's playlist.
"Maybe we didn't know a lot about music, but there was something that set Dylan apart from his contemporaries, that made us listen."
Rick also hosts a weekly evening of music at the Old Church Theatre, north of Trenton, where you might find him playing one of his distinctive original tunes, or dipping back into those songs of decades ago - often those of Bob Dylan.
Randy Stewart has been hosting musical events throughout the region for several years now. He delights in introducing audiences to the amazing array of local talent this area offers. He will be Master of Ceremonies for this show as well.
Mr. Stewart is a Canadian singer/songwriter who has been performing professionally for more than 30 years. He has been seen on television, heard on radio and recorded by the CBC. His recordings can be found in the delete bins of some of the country’s finest record stores.
He has been crusading for years to purge love songs from his performances. His mantra – Sad Songs & Funny Songs ‘I DON’T PLAY LOVE SONGS’ – has become familiar to music fans throughout the region. The lovelorn, lovesick and skeptical can all take refuge when Mr. Stewart takes the stage to give them something to sing about – that doesn’t wear its heart on its sleeve.
“There are a lot of performers out there singing about love and relationships – I’m just not one of ‘em”.
PLEASE NOTE: Advance Tickets are available online only until midnight Friday, September 1. Advance Tickets are not available on the day of the show. At-the-door Tickets are $30 (cash only) or $32 if paying by credit or debit.
