Another of our Fringe Japan events is a talk from Japanese judoka Takafumi Kitahara and Japanese rugby player Kenta Kutsuna. Check in starts at 11:15am, so please arrive early. Takafumi Kitahara In August 2017, Takafumi Kitahara moved to Scotland, after completing his postgraduate degree at the University of Tsukuba. He now works as an Assistant High Performance Judo Coach at SportScotland Institute of Sports. As a judo coach, he teaches and supports athletes who are aiming to participate in the Olympics. As a judo practitioner, during his university days he participated in the All Japan Judo Championships, and placed 5th in the Kodokan Cup. 日本語ページ : https://athletesexperiencelab.com/person/kitaharatakafumi/ Kenta Kutsuna Originally from Matsuyama in Ehime prefecture, 29 year old Kenta Kutsuna has played rugby since he was 5, and was active in top level rugby in high school and university. As an adult, he plays in the highest league in Japan. At 27, he was diagnosed with cancer and struggled with the experience of fighting the disease, and gained an unexpected sense of values. He returned to playing after recovering. He aimed to become a professional rugby player, which he had given up on before. After being discharged from hospital, he got a visa to England, the home country of rugby. He crossed the ocean in April 2023 to become the first Japanese player to sign a contract in Scotland's league, and is currently playing at an amateur club in Edinburgh.
