BPI in association with Bowers & Wilkins is delighted to invite BPI Members and special guests to the latest of our popular Insight Series.
The Future Of Music Communities & Worldbuilding: Lessons From The Games Industry will take place in person and via Live Stream on Tuesday 6th February 2024, 17.00 - 18.30 online (16.30 start for those attending in person) at Sony Music UK, 2 Canal Reach, London N1C 4DB.
The second installment of a three -part, specially commissioned Insight Sessions 50 series, focusing on the next 50 years of UK recorded music, the event will feature keynotes from BPI's new CEO, Dr Jo Twist; Zoe Scaman (Bodacious.be); and a virtual keynote from Sofie Hvitved (Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies).
The keynotes will be accompanied by real-world music and game collaborations, and end with a panel discussion, moderated by BPI, with Hari Ashurst-Venn (Director of Digital & New Tech, 4th Floor Creative, Sony Music UK), Zoe Scaman (Bodacious) and Laura Higgins (Director of Community Safety and Digital Civility, Roblox)
About our speakers:
Jo Twist, BPI
Dr Jo Twist OBE has been CEO of Ukie, the trade body for UK games and interactive entertainment since 2012. With a 25-year background across interactive entertainment, technology, education, creative media and youth culture, Jo has wide-ranging experience in high-level influencing, stakeholder management and organisational change. She sits on a range of high-level boards, committees, and advisory groups, including the Creative Industries Council, Creative UK Council, and the AHRC Creative Industries Advisory Group, representing the games and interactive entertainment sector and advocating on its behalf. She is a VP for games accessibility charity SpecialEffect, Patron of Safe in Our World mental health and games charity. She is also a King’s Appointed Trustee for Royal Historic Palaces, a Wiggin Foundation Trustee and stepped down as a BAFTA Trustee and Chair of the Games Committee in 2022. Jo is a Ravensbourne University Visiting Fellow and a Visiting Lecturer for Goldsmith’s University in the School of Computing. In 2016 she was awarded an OBE for services to the creative industries and was awarded the MCV Women in Games award for Outstanding Contribution. She was also named as one of the Evening Standard’s Progress 1000 Most Influential People in 2019 and entered the Computer Weekly Hall of Fame in 2021. She was awarded her Doctorate on online communities, young people and identity in 2001.
Zoe Scaman, Bodacious
Zoe is the founder of Bodacious, a strategy studio focused on illuminating and navigating the new frontiers of innovation and emerging technologies within the worlds of brands and entertainment. Her client roster includes Nike, Netflix, EA Games, Lego, Snapchat and many more.
She crafts ground-breaking strategies combining rigorous business intelligence, with 20+ years of brand strategy know-how and a futurist lens. Prior to Bodacious, she spent her career moving between trailblazing creative agencies; such as Droga5. Best-in-class entertainment companies, like Ridley Scott Creative Group and 77X, the
sports x youth culture studio, founded by NBA superstar Luka Dončić. Forward-thinking innovation consultancies such as Undercurrent. And world famous celebrities such as Enrique Iglesias and DJ Khaled.
Sofie Hvitved, Copenhagen Insitute for Futures Studies
Sofie Hvitved is a Futurist, Senior Advisor and Head of Media at the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies, where she is currently working on the future of emerging tech (e.g. metaverse, AI and web3) and how this will affect our lives, society and businesses. She is strongly engaged in the intersection between media, technology and entertainment and has a strategic background in the media industry, among others in DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation). She is also a member of the Danish Media Board under the Minister of Culture. She has lived and worked in various cities around the world in Europe and South America, and is currently living in Copenhagen. She has an MA in Media Studies from Aarhus University, Denmark.
The Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies is an independent, nonprofit futures think tank founded in 1969. CIFS's purpose is to equip and inspire individuals and organisations to act on the future today for the betterment of society. The institute is a globally engaged organisation working across the public, private, civic, and academic sectors. Laura Higgins, Roblox
Laura Higgins is Senior Director of Community Safety and Civility at Roblox with more than two decades of experience building proven safeguarding, online safety and civility programs. Roblox’s groundbreaking digital civility initiative is focused on providing the community with the skills needed to create positive online experiences in partnership with the world’s leading safety and industry organizations that drive meaningful change. Civility online is a new concept that’s based on existing principles—that everybody has a part to play in making the digital world a better place.
In her previous role with the UK Safer Internet Centre, Laura founded several award-winning services including the Professionals Online Safety Helpline and the world’s first helpline dedicated to supporting victims of online image based abuse. Laura has worked with the biggest names in tech, also sitting on Twitter and Snapchat’s advisory boards. She has spoken on digital safety topics across the globe and regularly appears in the media sharing her expertise with industry experts, parents and kids.
Hari Ashurst-Venn, Director of Digital and New Technologies at Fourth Floor Creative, Sony Music UK
Hari oversees key partner relationships for Sony Music UK centrally, including with TikTok, Meta, Snapchat, Discord and Twitch. Collaborating across digital marketing teams within Sony Music UK's label ecosystem, Hari works with labels such as Columbia, RCA, Ministry of Sound, Insanity, Black Butter and Catalogue. As well as this, Hari and his team incubates and surfaces new platforms and opportunities across the tech ecosystem, including those within AI, Mixed Reality and AR, Web3, Gaming and more.
Previously, Hari founded indie label Double Denim Records where he headed up A&R, discovering and breaking artists such as Kero Kero Bonito, Jay Som, Empress Of and more. He was also an artist manager at Red Light Management and has spent time in roles at music tech start-ups including Lickd, and Techstars alumni JAAK (one of the first Blockchain + Music start ups).
