The MAD House, Beaumaris, is a 1961 mid-century Modernist family home, typical of the Beaumaris design aesthetic from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. The current owners purchased in 2011 and were adamant their new home had too much character to see it bulldozed, hence they retained the footprint of the house and ‘restorated’ (restored/renovated) using as many original features as possible. The exterior is a combination of split-faced concrete block and timber cladding. The roof line is of a typical Modernist low pitch supported by exposed Oregon beams. Metal railings feature inside and out, along with slate, brightly toned wall tiles, timber floors and cabinetry. Vintage lighting, wallpaper, shelving and furniture were sourced to reinforce the authentic mid-century style. With modern conveniences and fixtures well disguised. Architect Adrian Bonomi was enlisted to re-imagine the kitchen and bathroom layout to make the most of the limited space. A new access point to the back yard was resolved with a steel and timber ramp. Timber sliding doors allow an expansive split-level, open-plan space from front to rear decks. The result achieves a contemporary lifestyle expectation without compromising the original Modernist design intent.
