Description
“Modern Slavery – Throwing off the hidden shackles through Prevention, Protection, Partnership and Prosecution”
Pioneering advocate Baroness Butler-Sloss will shine a spotlight onto the issue of slavery in Britain today. In 2014, the Home Office estimated that there were up to 13,000 people enslaved in the UK. Mostly invisible, these people are exploited in many ways, from being forced to work in brothels, factories, farms and fishing boats, to growing cannabis and even harvesting organs.
As part of an all-party working group of MPs and Lords, Baroness Butler-Sloss steered the 2015 Modern Slavery Act into law. This legislation contained a transparency of supply chains clause – a world first. The Baroness will reflect on the progress made in the eighteen months since the law came into force and the scale of the problem which remains.
Known for her high-profile work in family law and for being the first female Justice in the Court of Appeal, the Baroness has been praised for her "extraordinary understanding of people from all walks of life" Alan Levy QC and as "very practical, very down to earth, very robust, and very decisive" Richard Gordon QC.
