Originally for full orchestra, Scott Gabriel has re-scored the music for a cabaret-flavoured band. Silent film stands in for the original production’s ballet. Stephanie Conn sings the role of Anna—in the original German, with English titles—and is her alter-ego on screen.In The Seven Deadly Sins, Anna tells the tale of how she and her sister (Anna II) worked their way across America for seven years, raising money to build a house for her family back home in Louisiana. Brecht’s libretto explores themes of greed, corruption, self-deception, abuse of power and moral flexibility in an ironic voice that is remarkably up-to-date. It is also uniquely suited for modern attention spans, as it runs just 50 minutes.THE FRIENDS OF GRAVITY is a new musical theatre company founded by Scott Gabriel and Stephanie Conn. They present big ideas on a small scale, straddling a range of musical and theatrical styles that draw on spoken word, cabaret, ritual, and opera.
