Description
We have a very special set of guests joining us at secret Soho this Thursday, Aug 3, at 7pm for a talk about the art and life of Maria Kreyn followed by a deep dive on Haleh Liza Gafori's musical translations of Rumi, and their joint conversation about bringing old works into new light.
Maria will take you on a chronological tour of her origin story, unlikely education, public and private works... to the new series she's been developing over the past two years.
She will chat about artistic flow states, old-master inspirations, the empathic range of figurative painting, why the portrait is such a glorious obsession, and how making semi abstract work is a great foil to the human form.
Haleh Liza Gafori, the celebrated a poet, singer, and translator of Rumi's poetry. Will share a conversation on her work, as well as a performance of some of her current favorite pieces.
About the artists:
Maria Kreyn is a visual artist, educated at the University of Chicago (in math and philosophy), and self-taught in painting. Her works have been exhibited in numerous galleries in the United States and Europe, and have traveled to multiple museums in China. Maria’s work has been featured in Vanity Fair, the Wall Street Journal, The Art Newspaper, The Financial Times, ArtNews and many others. Maria’s painting ‘Alone Together’ features in and drives the plot of Shonda Rhimes’ ABC television show The Catch. Her public works feature a collection of 8 monumental paintings based on Shakespeare, commissioned by Andrew Lloyd Webber, now on permanent display in the lobby of London’s historic Theater Royal Drury Lane, open to the public daily.
Haleh Liza Gafori, vocalist, poet, and translator born in NYC of Persian descent, weaves chants, poems, original Rumi translations, and stories, creating a heart-opening, passionate, and playfully disorienting mystical animist tapestry, recited and sung in English and Persian.
Her book GOLD, featuring her acclaimed translations of poetry by the mystic and sage Rumi, was published in 2022 by New York Review Books / Penguin Random House.
Supported by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, Gafori is currently developing a cross-media performance piece bringing the book to life. She presents at universities, festivals, and venues across the country, Lincoln Center, Stanford University, and Omega Institute. Her work has been published by Columbia University Press, Harvard Review (forthcoming), Literary Hub, and elsewhere.
GOLD has been featured on On Being's Poetry Unbound, has been celebrated by a diverse set of luminaries including Tim Ferriss, V (Eve Ensler), and Kaveh Akbar, and was featured on Maria Popova's Favorites of 2022, a list of "books that shimmer with the eternal and the universal, books bound to go on nourishing generations to come...offering succor for the elemental challenge of how to live a harmonious, fulfilling, and wonder-smitten life."
