About the Somerville Gathering
The Gathering's theme is "Making, Scaling and Inclusion," and we invite attendees to discuss the growth opportunities and challenges faced by makers and manufacturers looking to scale in cities.
We will examine a range of issues—from contracting and support services to workforce and real estate needs—and how those issues cut across different industry clusters. Through facilitated discussions and other interactive activities, our aim is to better understand the types of support available from both the public and private sector to make scaling of manufacturers not only possible, but more inclusive.
As businesses scale-up in cities, UMA recognizes that there is an urgent need to leverage that growth to advance equity. Inclusive manufacturing can take a variety of forms—from examining how maker spaces and academic institutions can work within their local communities to build talent pipelines to accelerator programs that support the growth of minority and women entrepreneurs to creating more connectedness with local job-seekers. An honest dialogue between businesses, policymakers and practitioners can help pave the way for greater connectivity between makers, manufacturers and the cities of which they are an essential part.

About UMA Gatherings
UMA Gatherings serve as an opportunity to create a more interconnected urban manufacturing ecosystem: from makers and manufacturers, to those who support their work in municipal government, workforce nonprofits and academic institutions. Further, they provide a needed space to develop new policies and share ideas to support the resurgence of manufacturing in American cities.
Following an “unconference” model, UMA members interact through facilitated discussions, rapid-style presentations and networking opportunities. Gathering attendees develop their own agendas by selecting discussion areas from UMA’s Communities of Practice: workforce development, land use and real estate development, local branding and equity, as well as other relevant areas of interest, such as scaling up and industry-related breakout groups.
About UMA
UMA is a coalition of 500 members across 145 cities who are sustaining and growing manufacturing in urban centers. Manufacturing matters, and it matters deeply to the health and vitality of cities. A strong urban manufacturing base supports innovation, sustains living-wage jobs that provide a crucial pathway to the middle class, promotes workforce inclusion and increasingly advances environmental sustainability.
About Somerville
A small, dense city, Somerville has an amazing diversity of makers and manufacturers – from chocolatiers and foundries, to cideries and machine shops. We will expose attendees to all types of facilities including Artisans Asylum (a community-driven makerspace), Greentown Labs (a prototyping, co-working and shared equipment space for green tech entrepreneurs), Aeronaut Brewing, Union Square Donuts, Taza Chocolate and more. Somerville’s DIY culture and proximity to advanced institutions make it a creative epicenter for the Northeast and our Gathering will feature stories from local service providers, first-hand experiences from manufacturers and a welcome address by current Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone.
