Description
Sam and Anton will both be attending GDevCon #5 in Stuttgart, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to collaborate on a workshop. If you are also attending GDevCon and would like to attend this workshop in person, please let us know.
During the first part of the workshop we will discuss unit testing, automated developer testing, workflows, and practices. We will also discuss common testing patterns used for making tests more robust and easier to maintain. We will tackle the challenges commonly encountered in LabVIEW, especially when testing code close to the hardware.
In the second part of the workshop we will talk about Approval Testing, which is a different way to approach unit testing. We'll talk about it how it works, why it useful and give a few examples of some of the features, like scrubbers, parameterized tests and combination tests. We'll talk about how to leverage approval testing for working with legacy code. We'll also show how to use it to test scripting code. There will be at least one hands-on-keyboard/mouse exercise, possibly more depending on timing/interest.
Finally we will discuss how improvements to testability impacts the overall design of a system and how coupling is weakened through dependency injection. We will cover available tooling and conclude the session with a practical exercise exploring the techniques and practices presented.
