Description
Are you tired of trying other people’s formulas?
Are you looking to carve out a path that’s original or totally your own?
Are you clear that life requires both planning and improvisation?
Then join Jules Munns, Angelo John Lewis and Fiona Robertson for Waking Up: The Improvisation and Spirituality Weekend.
What do we mean by Waking Up?
It’s very easy to be lulled into a trance by life’s
routines. We go through the motions in a
kind of hypnotic, half-dead slumber, asleep to our greater sense of destiny or purpose.
Waking Up means unshackling ourselves
from the habitual patterns that prevent us from living the life that we truly
want to live. It means uncovering a mature version of childlike innocence which
includes freedom, openness and spontaneity.
What does improvisation have to do with Waking Up?
In a word, everything!
When we’re improvising, we are in the moment, mindful and free. We’re dancing
in a kind of
flow that allows internal
barriers to break down and solutions to emerge. There is a dynamic, fluid interplay
between ourselves and our environment. Developing our innate ability to
improvise balances our tendencies to over-analyze, engage in excessive
planning, or live in the future or the past. We uncover our in-the-moment
ability to create a relationship between what’s going on inside of us and
what’s in front of us – without even needing to think about it.
What does improvisation have to do with spirituality?
There are many definitions of spirituality, but the one we like best defines it as the sense of connecting to something infinitely bigger than ourselves. For some of us, this involves having a deep sense of the sacred dimension of all of life. For others, it means the continual refinement of our noblest qualities, a quest for meaning or mystical fulfillment.
Whatever the definition of spirituality, everyone agrees on two things: spirituality isn’t static, and it demands practice. The discipline of improvisation can be an active spiritual practice, a kind of extroverted twin of meditation. Whereas passive meditation teaches us the skill of turning our attention inward, improvisation requires us to still our minds, drop our egos, and be in direct relationship with whoever and whatever is in front of us. Improv invites us to explore the innate interconnectedness between ourselves and others, while encouraging us to be in service to spontaneity, playfulness and trust.
So what will we do during the weekend?
Rather than telling you what we’ll do – we’re improvisors, right! -- let’s instead focus on our facilitation goals for the weekend.
We’ll create a safe, playful and fun environment for you to get a deeper sense of what spirituality means to you.
We’ll lead a range of activities that allow you to explore how your individual way of being in the world plays out in community
We’ll give you take-away tools to enhance the discoveries you’ve made during the weekend, such as individual and group improvisation practices, active meditation exercises, and tools for reflection and inquiry.
