At the heart to this program is the iconic Violin Concerto in e minor by Felix Mendelssohn. The GTPO is thrilled to have Yolanda Bruno as our guest soloist. Yolanda is a rising star in the Canadian violin world, the Associate Concertmaster at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and a passionate advocate for bringing music to widely diverse audiences.
Complementing the Mendelssohn are pieces centred on Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Cree composer Andrew Balfour was inspired by Tchaikovsky's "Hymn to the Cherubim" when he wrote Pyotr's Dream for the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, and the piece has entered the repertoire for string orchestras everywhere. Selections from Tchaikovsky's Orchestral Suite #1 round out the program. The great Russian composer's suites are not as well known as they should be - full of the brilliant orchestrations and enticing musical melodies which have made his ballet music and symphonies so beloved.
