Description
Join BLACK GOLD Sunday, December 8th for 4K restoration screening of Spike Lee's SCHOOL DAZE! Please note, this event is free to attend for members of the black community - message Black Gold for details!—"Before 'A Different World' came into its own, before 'Higher Learning' and 'Dear White People' critiqued the fraught relationship between black students and white students at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs), and before 'grown-ish,' there was SCHOOL DAZE. Spike Lee’s 1988 sophomore feature took a critical look at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), revealing their beauty and complexity in a decade where black faces were an afterthought in media....Taking the momentum from his low-budget black-and-white first feature, 'She’s Gotta Have It,' to shoot on a much larger budget, Lee went directly to the campuses of real-life HBCUs Spelman, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown to create a level of authenticity for the fictional Mission College and its diverse array of black students -- in glorious full color."- ThrillistDigital restoration courtesy of Sony.—Generously sponsored by The Beguiling Books & Art.Black Gold is made possible in part by the funding support from the Ontario Arts Council - Conseil des arts de l'Ontario, an agency of the Government of Ontario.—Black Gold wishes to acknowledge the Haudenosaunee, the Huron-Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the New Credit, the original keepers of this land, for hosting Black Gold and The Royal Cinema. Today, the meeting place of Tkaronto is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and present in this territory.—Accessibility:The Royal Cinema has 5 accessible seating sections.
